About us
The Committee on Sustainable Development Vienna is a substantive committee of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organisations (CoNGO) in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations.
The work we do
The Committee interacts with the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the Vienna-based UN organisations (UNOV, UNIDO, UNODC, IAEA, CTBTO, UNEP) and the Conference of NGOs (CoNGO) as well as the Vienna-based NGO Committees and with other international organisations based in Austria, such as IIASA, IOM.
Campaigning for signing and ratification of the Aarhus Convention
Identifying missing links of crime that affect the environment in international Conventions and try to get in dialogue with member states.
Promoting Civil Society participation in negotiations of new Conventions such as the “Cybercrime Convention”
Advocating for the possibilities and tools provided by UNODC to get involved in the review mechanism of UNTOC, UNCAC
Strengthening civil society voices in UNODC Synthetic Drug Strategy 2021-2025
Profiling/supporting/ campaigning for resolutions concerning transnational environmental crime during CCPCJ, UNTOC sessions.
The aims of the committee are to:
Focus on the environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainable development.
Provide a forum for NGOs interested in discussing and analysing the work of the UN intergovernmental bodies active in the field of sustainable development, as well as in related activities of the Vienna-based UN organisations.
Encourage new initiatives and seek input into civil society’s contribution to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in September 2015.
Facilitate liaison with the United Nations organisations and agencies working in the field of sustainable development
Membership of the Committee
Currently the Committee on Sustainable Development has 30 member organisations. Membership to the Committee is open to NGOs that enjoy consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) and have been granted general, special or roster status and which have a permanent representative accredited to the United Nations in Vienna.
